Lesson 3: Following up and Keeping in Touch

Leverage the contacts and knowledge of a few people you know very well – that’s the power of networking.

When you meet someone, how do you decide whether or not to follow up with them, or keep in touch with them?

Or do you try to keep in touch wit everyone you meet?

Did you know that you don’t need to know the “whole world”?

What you do need is to cultivate deep relationships with a core group of people.

Self-Assessment Quiz

Which of these apply to you?

  • Do you try to follow up with everyone you meet at a networking event?
  • Do you often feel exhausted from trying to keep in touch with all the people you know?
  • Are you often frustrated with the lack of response from the people you meet?
  • Do you feel a lack of support from people in your network?

If you answered “yes” to one or more of these questions, take a step back and consider how you choose whom to network with.

Networking Mistake #3

Another common mistake people often make is trying to follow up with and keep in touch with all the people they know and meet, in the same way.

Contrary to popular belief, networking is not about meeting and staying in touch with as many people as possible.

It’s about finding and meeting the right people at the right time through those people you already know.

If you’re clear about what you want from your networking efforts, it can help you decide whom you want to meet, follow up with, and keep in touch with – and equally importantly, why you want to do so.

And if you build strong working relationships with this group of people, you’ll find it much easier to ask them for help when you need it.

You will also have a good idea about how best to reciprocate.

How to Correct Mistake #3

Strong, mutually-beneficial relationships are at the heart of effective and successful networking, and module 3 of the Effortless Networking self-study program shows you how to build and maintain these without overwhelming yourself.

For now, here is ONE question you can answer to avoid making networking mistake #3:

Who are the people in your network? Why did you choose to develop a working relationship with them — based on what criteria?

Use your business goals to help you strategically build your network.

Then use the contacts and resources of this group of people to find you want and need.

In lesson 4: what you must do, to get others to recommend you enthusiastically.
