Thanks for the article. I also believe online networking can be tedious. But, I also think that you have to know where to put all of your effort. I like to concentrate on one specific website. That way I don't have to check a bunch of different sites. The one I like to use is www.personavita.com. It is basically an online portfolio of your work, achievements and goals where others can validate your credentials. You can also make a personalized URL link to whoever you want to show it to. I think it cuts out all of the hassle while still staying in touch with others.

As a long time friend and fellow Marine of Cpl Jeremy Poague I too can attest to his diligence as a highly skilled professional on and off duty. He constantly strives for perfection and I believe he will continue to work at this level and above for a long long time. I would highly recommend his services to anyone. Semper Fi

I can attest to Jeremy's many talents. He has put in a sidewalk, tile floor in a bathroom and installed carpet for us. His prices are fair and his work is great. He is reliable and gets the work done in a reasonable amount of time.

What you have in Jeremy is that he does what the contract specifies, on time, in budget, and we have never needed to ask for a call back to fix an issue. There never are issues. Perhaps the icing on the cake is that he always does just a bit more than you expect. Very good work that lasts a long time. We never consider calling anyone else.

Networking does take some effort to make it work. It doesn't just happen overnight with no input from you. I think that is one of the biggest misconceptions about this new wave of online professional networking. Just because you don't have to go to a bunch of events you don't want to go to, doesn't mean that you can just throw your name on a professional network and expect to gain a lot of rewards.

It does take time to build a solid professional network, but the online tools do help.

Hi Srirupa,

I have only worked on Lesson #1 and it already hit the nail on the head for me.

I didn't realize how vague I was being in my networking attempts until now and I have worked out a different focus. I now know that what I was doing was only half of the task. I'm a network marketer and I was giving out catalogs and making a personal connection with people and have made it very easy for people to contact me but I wasn't getting their contact information so I have not been able to follow up my efforts.

That will all change now, thanks to you. I am looking forward to working on lesson 2.

Wow! what a great way to look at it! I remember reading once that fear and nervousness have the same feeling that excitement does - that funny jumpy tummy. So now, when I feel scared or nervous, I think "I'm excited!". What we focus on increases, so why not make the positive increase.

Please give us more of these real life practical examples, it makes your ideas and concepts come alive. Writing instructors keep drumming into heads "Show, don't tell".

Great comments! I think different analogies and different ways to explain the same thing goes a long way to clearing up a misconception that's so widespread. So thanks for sharing.

Sri:

I use this analogy when I train.

"I'm going to describe a business activity. Tell me what you are doing when you do what I describe.

"There is a new building you have never canvased before. You get out of your car armed with brochures and business cards. You go from office to office finding out if anyone needs the product or service you offer. What do you call that?"

Someone always says "Making cold calls."

Then I continue:

"O.K., how is it any different when you go to business after hours or other event, arm yourself with business cards and brochures, and then begin to talk to people to find out whether or not they have any need for your product or service?"

Cold calling is a prospecting tool, and when we go to a networking event and make cold calls, we might in fact occasionally find a prospect. However, when we do that we pretty much lose any chance we have of actually NETWORKING. Networking starts with building relationships, and most people would not put cold calling high on their list of relationship building activities.

Don’t go to a networking event and make cold calls.

Hi Sri:

To me networking is going to events and connecting with people, finding out their interest and introducing your profession or business. They may not need your service but knows someone who may need your service. Prospecting is getting a list of numbers as in real estate and contacting homeowners to find out if they are interested in selling their homes.
